Videographer Kuwait: what to expect when you hire one for a documentary

Hiring a videographer for a documentary means planning a story, not only booking a camera. This guide explains what the work should include and how to plan it, using the HUSAAK documentary made by Prismic Media as the example.

Videographer Kuwait: what should the job include?

A documentary job should include the idea, the shoot, the edit and the sound, not filming alone.

Many listings for videographers in Kuwait show reels and day rates. A reel shows how footage looks. It does not show whether the team can build a story that holds an audience from start to finish.

At Prismic Media, production runs from concept to post, in commercial and documentary formats. The team works with two in-house photo and video studios and an in-house music and sound studio with a voice-over booth, so picture and sound stay with one team.

  • Concept: the story the film tells and who tells it.
  • Shooting: interviews, location footage and any studio scenes.
  • Post-production: editing, motion graphics and the final version.
  • Music and sound: score, sound design and voice-over.

How is a documentary like HUSAAK built?

A documentary is built from interviews and footage that follow one clear thread.

In the HUSAAK film, that thread is the company's story. According to the film, the founder first saw large mountain landscapes on a university trip to Alaska at the age of 19, moved to Oman for work in 2011, and led the first trip in 2013 after posting an announcement on Instagram.

The film then widens the story. A second hiker describes nearly giving up on the climb and finishing step by step. Other voices follow: three Saudi women who travelled the world for a programme, a woman who cooked for a group, and a speaker on how tourism in Oman developed.

This structure is a useful model for any company film. One central story carries the film, and each additional voice shows a different effect of the same work.

What should you plan before the shoot?

Plan the story and the people first, then the locations and the schedule.

Write down the one story the film must tell. List the people who can tell it, from founders to customers and partners. Decide which language each person will speak in, and whether the film needs subtitles.

In the HUSAAK film, speakers use Gulf Arabic with English phrases mixed in, as people speak naturally. A plan should allow for this and decide early how the final film will handle both languages.

  • The main story in one or two sentences.
  • The list of speakers and what each one adds.
  • The locations the speakers will describe.
  • The audience and the languages they read and hear.

How should the location footage be used?

Location footage should show what the speakers describe, so the viewer sees it as they hear it.

In the HUSAAK film, speakers describe the climb up Jebel Shams, the hanging lake on the mountain, and seeing the Milky Way for the first time. The footage puts these places in front of the viewer.

The founder also says that pictures on Instagram drew people to places they did not know before, and quotes the saying that a picture is worth a thousand words. A documentary about a place should be planned with that in mind: the images must carry part of the story on their own.

What happens after the shoot?

After the shoot, the edit shapes hours of material into one story, and sound and music finish it.

The editor selects the strongest moments from each interview and places footage over them. Music and sound design set the pace and the mood. Subtitles make the film readable for viewers in both Arabic and English.

A long film can also be cut into shorter pieces for social media. Plan these cuts before the shoot, so the team films what each version needs.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a script for a documentary?

A documentary usually needs a story outline and interview questions rather than a full script. The answers then shape the edit.

Who should appear in a company documentary?

People who can tell the story from different sides: founders, team members, customers and partners. The HUSAAK film combines its founder with hikers and travellers.

Does Prismic Media handle music and voice-over?
