This guide is for companies in Kuwait that want an agency to run their social media every month. It explains what a retainer should cover, how to agree the scope, how to compare agencies and what to measure.

What does a social media management retainer cover?

A retainer is a monthly agreement. The agency plans, makes and publishes your social media content, and works with your team every month instead of once.

The word covers very different scopes. For one agency it means a set number of designed posts. For another it means a plan per platform, shoots, video, community replies and a monthly review. Before you compare prices, compare what is inside.

A complete retainer usually has these parts:

  • Strategy: what each platform is for, who it speaks to and how the content should look and sound.
  • A monthly plan: the posts, videos and stories for the month, with dates, approved before production.
  • Content creation: copy in Arabic, English or both, visual direction, design and templates.
  • Shooting and editing: photo and video made for the plan, not only stock images.
  • Publishing: posts go out on time, in the right format for each platform.
  • Community management: who answers comments and messages, in which language and how fast.
  • A monthly review: what was published, what worked, and what changes next month.

Do you need a retainer or a one-off project?

Choose a retainer when your accounts must stay active every week and the content has to follow your launches, offers and seasons. Most brands that sell to the public in Kuwait are in this group.

Choose a one-off project when you need a single piece of work: a campaign launch, a set of templates, a brand shoot or an audit of your accounts. A project has a clear end and a fixed list of deliverables.

Many companies start with a project, such as a shoot and a content plan, and move to a retainer once they know how they want to work with the agency.

What should the monthly scope say?

Most problems in a retainer come from a scope that was never written down. Put these points in the proposal before you sign:

  • The platforms: for example Instagram, TikTok, X, LinkedIn, Snapchat or Facebook, and which ones matter most.
  • The output per month: the number of posts, videos and stories, and their length.
  • Shoot days: how many each month, and whether they happen in a studio or on location.
  • Languages: Arabic, English or both, and whether the Arabic is formal or Kuwaiti dialect.
  • Approvals: who approves on your side, how many rounds of changes are included and how many days each round takes.
  • Community management: the hours covered, the language and what the agency may answer on its own.
  • Paid ads: whether ad management is included, and that the ad budget is a separate line from the agency fee.

How do you compare social media agencies in Kuwait?

Look at work, not promises. Ask for accounts the agency runs today, and look at several months of posts, not one highlight.

Ask who makes the content. An agency with its own photographers, video team and studio can shoot for your plan every month. An agency that outsources every shoot depends on other people's dates.

Read the Arabic. In Kuwait, the Arabic copy often decides whether a brand sounds local or translated. Ask for samples written for brands like yours.

Meet the team that will work on your account, not only the people who pitch. Ask how many accounts each of them runs.

Ask about ownership. Your accounts, passwords and the files the agency makes for you should stay yours. Put it in the contract.

Be careful with guaranteed numbers. No agency controls a platform's reach. A promise of a set number of followers or views in a set time is a warning sign.

What should the first months look like?

The first month is mostly set-up: a review of your accounts and competitors, the strategy, the tone of voice, templates and the first content plan.

From the second month, the plan, the shoots and the publishing should run on a steady rhythm. You approve the plan before the month starts and you see the content before it goes out.

At the end of each month, ask for a short review: what went out, what performed well and badly, and what the agency will change. Judge the work on a few months, not on one post.

What should you measure, and what should you not expect?

Measure what links to your business: messages and enquiries from social media, visits to your site or app, store visits you can trace, and the quality of comments and replies.

Reach, views and engagement show whether people see and react to the content. They are useful signals, but they are not the goal on their own.

Do not expect a retainer to replace advertising. Organic content builds the brand and keeps the account alive. Paid ads put it in front of new people. Most brands need both, planned together.

What should you send an agency first?

A short brief saves a week of meetings. It lets the agency propose a scope that fits you, rather than a standard package.

  • Your business, your customers and what you sell.
  • The accounts you have now, and what you think is not working.
  • Your goals for the next six to twelve months.
  • The platforms and languages you want.
  • Your brand guidelines, if you have them, and any brands whose content you like.
  • A budget range for the fee, and for ads if they are included.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a social media retainer last?

Long enough to plan, produce and review the work. One month is rarely enough to judge an agency. Agree a first period and a notice period in writing.

Who owns the accounts and the content?

You should. Agree in the contract that your accounts, passwords and the photos, videos and designs made for you stay with your company.

Do brands in Kuwait need content in both Arabic and English?

It depends on your customers. Many brands use both. Decide which language leads on each platform, and whether the Arabic is formal or Kuwaiti dialect.

Is paid advertising part of a retainer?

Sometimes. Ask whether ad management is included, and keep the ad budget as a separate line from the agency fee.
